We firmly believe that every child can achieve in maths and want our children to value and appreciate the importance of mastering this subject.  It is essential in all walks of life, but critical to science, technology and engineering; therefore, we intend to foster confidence, enjoyment and ensure all of our children master maths.

The National Curriculum 2014 states that all children should be taught:

  • The fundamentals of fluency
  • The ability to reason
  • To solve problems by applying their skills.

We value the importance of a maths curriculum which is creative and engaging.  From the very beginning of their experience with us, we encourage children to access practical resources in order to understand the many patterns and links in mathematics, and promote a wide mathematical vocabulary so they can articulate their thinking.  Our children need to develop the necessary skills and fluency to become deep thinkers, applying these skills to the many different areas of maths.  It is our intention that children recognise and can manipulate the many connections within this subject, and across the wider curriculum.

Teaching staff have access to the mastery scheme White Rose Maths, which provides the foundations needed to ensure fluency, reasoning and problem solving are used in daily teaching.
