We believe that a quality English curriculum should develop children’s love of reading and appreciation of literature and enable them to be effective communicators both in written and spoken forms, equipping children with the English skills needed for their future learning and throughout life.



We believe that reading is at the centre of learning providing the foundations to access the entire curriculum. Through reading pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually and, in particular, understand our rich and varied literary heritage.  We emphasise the importance of reading for pleasure, reading widely and developing a secure understanding. Our curriculum is structured around ensuring that children read or have read to them a wide range of high quality texts. 


Speaking and Listening

We aim to take every opportunity to develop children’s ability to speak with confidence and expression.  As a school we emphasise modelling correct spoken English and supporting the children to express their ideas clearly in sentences.  We are aware of the importance of developing children’s vocabulary to support their spoken language, support their reading and written work.



We recognise the importance of nurturing an environment where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately in a variety of styles and genres. Our curriculum emphasises exploring and responding to a variety of texts that provide a model for high quality writing.  We recognise that writing flows from reading.


Early Reading and Writing

Through the use of clear and synthetic phonics, children are taught the segmenting and blending skills that they need to progress and become competent, fluent and successful readers and writers.
