At Whatfield Primary School, we are committed to ensuring the health and safety of all pupils. If your child requires medication during school hours, we have clear policies and procedures in place to ensure proper administration and compliance with safety regulations.
Where a child is well enough to be in school, but requires medicine, the dosage should be administered at home if possible. For example antibiotics three times daily could be administered breakfast, after school and before bed, removing the need for a dose in school time.
If a lunchtime dosage were necessary, (for example antibiotics four times daily), then parents can come into school to administer it at lunchtime.
Where parents cannot arrange for an adult to do this, they can arrange for medicine to be administered by school staff. Medications must be in their original packaging with proper labelling, including the pupil’s name, dosage instructions, and prescribing doctor. Written authorisation must be given by parents for staff to administer medication of any kind.
If you know your child is under the weather and may need a dose of Calpol to help them through the day, please send in Calpol from home with the box clearly named with a written note of when they are able to have their dosage.
The school keeps Calpol purely for emergency use.
We will always be as accommodating as we can and we thank you for your continued support.
For those pupils in our school who have specific medical needs or who require an inhaler for Asthma or an Epipen for allergies or intolerances, we ask parents to complete an Asthma Care Plan / provide a Health Care Plan from the child's GP / consultant to ensure staff know how to look after your child and to be kept on our school files. These plans are reviewed termly by parents.
